Challenges to Vegetable Production in the Modern Age

Some crops such as sweet potatoes, yams and peppers are farmed exclusively for consumption, while others are used for consumption as well but require further irrigation to encourage their growth. A typical family will grow a variety of vegetables, with the main crop being the produce that can be eaten on its own, as well as a second crop for storage. In some cases, like in Central America, other vegetables may be grown on larger plantations as a means of supplementing the main crop. Either way, it is important to cultivate vegetables that are suitable both for local consumption and for export, or the family will suffer financial hardship, since the market for locally grown vegetables is often small compared to the market for imported vegetables.
This brings us to one of the problems faced by modern agriculture: the problem of soil loss caused by soil erosion. Vegetables, like most plants, grow best in well-drained soils that are kept in shape by regular irrigation. As mentioned earlier, the second major challenge faced by vegetable-growing farms is excessive water. The problem with water scarcity is not limited to urban and suburban dwellers. This issue has become more pronounced as droughts continue to become more frequent and extreme. A problem that is bound to continue in the foreseeable future is water pollution. A solution to this problem could be to build large-scale facilities that filter large quantities of untreated water and store it in reservoirs.
The third challenge to vegetable production is pest infestation. Pests such as bugs, rodents, and aphids can wreak havoc on the quality and flavor of vegetables. Some pests are difficult to contain or are too resilient to be killed. In these situations, a growing industry has been developing pesticides that act as both preventatives and curators of pest infestations. However, as noted, these pesticides and poisons have both severe environmental consequences and human health risks. In addition to being illegal and unsafe, the use of these poisons for pest control raises concerns about the future safety of people and animals raised for food consumption.
